Hope Church, Goldington is an evangelical church. ‘Evangelical’ means Good News. We want to share the Good News about Jesus Christ and how he came into the world to save sinners, people like us.
Everything that we stand for as a church is based on the Bible, which is God’s word to us.
According to the Bible, God created us and loves us, but will judge us and is prepared to punish us for our sin. However, he sent his son, Jesus, to die in our place, so that all the punishment we deserve has fallen on him. Believing in Jesus means that we can be forgiven by God. We believe that, although Jesus died, God raised him from the dead. Jesus lives and rules today and has opened the way to heaven for us. Therefore, as Christians, we are waiting for Jesus to return – when he will judge everyone, rescue those who have believed in him, and punish those who have not.
To become a Christian, the Bible makes it clear that we have to turn to Christ, accepting his rule over us, and relying on his death to bring us forgiveness from God.
To live as a Christian, we need to listen to the Bible and obey what God says; we need to talk with God in prayer, and we need to encourage others (and be encouraged) by meeting with other Christians. It is also important that we live no longer for ourselves but for God, and try to make God known to others. God’s Spirit is with those who have turned to Christ, helping us to know Jesus, to become more like him and equipping us to serve him.
